When it comes to the practical implementation of digitization and cloud computing, developers often turn out to be a bottleneck that slows things down. Couchbase’s global study examined causes and consequences.
Developer teams are under massive pressure of expectations, delay cloud and digitization projects and at the same time receive far too little support. That’s according to Couchbase’s latest Global Survey. In the study, 650 IT decision-makers worldwide were asked about their experiences in implementing digitization and cloud computing. After that, 88 percent of the developers are under great pressure. In relation to Germany, the most difficult hurdles are too tight deadlines (40 percent), too little time for too many tasks (39 percent), a lack of technological prerequisites (32 percent) and inadequate skills (30 percent).
But that’s not all. Problems with project management make matters worse. Twenty-eight percent of respondents report problems setting up teams for new projects, 43 percent have difficulty aligning with project goals, and as many as 49 percent have trouble understanding where their teams are on the project schedule. The Global Survey identifies the disproportionately low growth of teams as one of the causes of this dilemma. While an increase in spending of 26 percent is planned for digital transformation projects, the development teams only grew by 3 percent. The consequences can be fatal: for 20 percent of those surveyed, missing the target meant that no new projects were tackled in the last 12 months. This can explain why 33 percent of IT managers are investing in new technologies to make work easier for developers. And 37 percent of those surveyed stated that the pressure from the development teams acted as a driver for digital transformation projects. This shows their direct influence on the rate of change in companies.
“The successful future of entire companies can depend on the success of digital transformation projects,” explains Ravi Mayuram, Chief Technology Officer at Couchbase. “The development teams need every conceivable support for this, because the digital transformation stands and falls with them. This support must be understood as a competitive advantage in the race for digitization and must therefore be intensified quickly and purposefully.”
