Here is the new Mercedes EQS – a luxury cruiser with room for seven

Mercedes ‘new SUV is the Germans’ latest electric car that is extra everything for those who need space and luxury.

Not very long ago, there was a renaissance of electric cars at Mercedes. But now they have picked up speed and are launching models on the assembly line. Last in line is the EQS suv which is simply a crossover version of the luxury EQS.

In terms of dimensions, Mercedes’ latest is a really big piece. With 5.13 meters in length, it is a good bit longer than most available. As an example, the BMW IX is only 4.95 meters and the Audi E-tron is even smaller with its 4.90.

And size matters. A clear proof of this is that EQS actually has room for seven, an achievement that few electric cars can handle.

That it is a large car is clear even in the luggage. You get 195 liters with seven seats. This increases to 800 with five seats and 2,100 liters with all rear seats folded down (2,020 in the seven-seater car).

Just like with regular EQS, the car is built on Mercedes’ dedicated EVA2 platform. Most components are the same, so is the battery pack. 108 kWh (net) has been poked down and in the entry-level version 450+, which gives a range of 660 kilometers on good days. Then it is a rear-wheel drive car that has 265 kW corresponding to 360 horsepower. With four-wheel drive, the range is cut to 613 kilometers. A figure that also stands out in the more potent version 580 4Matic with its 400 kW / 544 horsepower.

The charging options are either 11- or 22 kW AC or 200 kW for fast charging. If you deal with the latter, the journey from ten to 80 percent charge should take 31 minutes.

Regardless of which model you choose, adaptive air suspension is standard. However, the four-wheel drive options have one option the entry-level car lacks: off-road. If you hit this, the ground clearance is increased by 25 millimeters. Something that is also standard is four-wheel steering, but those who think that the 4.5 degrees that the rear wheels can steer is too little – you can unlock 10 degrees. This as well as things like head up display with AR technology or an assistant for reversing with a trailer can be bought via remote connection after you have bought the car.

However, something you need to decide on when ordering is the so-called “Hyperscreen screen”. This is an option of 1.4 meters that extends the entire width of the cabin and where infotainment systems, driver instrumentation and passenger display are included.

Exactly when we can expect to see EQS SUVs at Mercedes dealers is not entirely clear. However, the sales start of the car will start this summer. Award? At the time of writing, the Swedish price is not official, but considering that regular EQS starts at SEK 1,125,000 – the crossover variant’s price tag is also expected to start north of the million.
