The technology works, and it may already be included in certain electric cars next year.
Although it was already known that the range of electric cars makes them suitable for everyday use, the fact that it still takes a relatively long time to fully charge a vehicle with a range of 5-600 kilometers is still a barrier to entry for many. Another question is whether the “refueling” of electric cars follows a different logic than that of gasoline or diesel vehicles traveling from full tank to full tank.
Regardless, it is a common opinion that many people would only switch to an electric car if its range reaches at least 1,000 kilometers, and the battery can be charged in roughly the same time as refueling a vehicle powered by fossil fuels.
The solution to the latter has already been found by the Chinese car manufacturer NIO – one of whose assembly plants operates in Hungary – and an electric car with a range of up to 1,000 km has already been presented, but so far it has not been possible to bring the two under one roof.
This has now been solved by the Chinese company Greater Bay Technologies (GBT), which was founded by Huang Xiangdong and Pei Feng in 2020. The two professionals previously met at the Chinese electric car company GAC, which is the third most popular e-car manufacturer in the Far Eastern country, after Tesla and BYD.
The company now claims nothing less than that the range of their newly developed battery – named Phoenix – reaches 1,000 kilometers on a single charge, and it only takes 6 minutes to fully charge it.
The Chinese company has also found a solution to one of the current serious problems of electric cars: the range of electric cars decreases in cold weather, however, according to GBT, their technology – using superconducting materials and heat management technologies – works just as efficiently even at -20 degrees Celsius.
Investors also seriously believe in the company, as GBT has become a “unicorn” in just two years, i.e. a company whose value exceeds one billion dollars.
According to Huang, Phoenix batteries may appear in GAC’s Aion electric cars as early as next year, but also in other manufacturers’ models.
