When used together with certain medicines, some of the medicinal herbs can lead to interactions, the result of which may be the failure of the medicinal effect or the occurrence of serious side effects.

Senna leaf, mother leaf

Senna leaf (senna leaf – Cassia senna) and fruit (mother leaf – Cassia angustifolia) herbal laxatives that increase bowel movement. As part of their mechanism of action, they inhibit the reabsorption of water and minerals (salts) from the large intestine. In other words: during the long-term use of these natural laxatives in higher doses, the level of some salts and ions (e.g. potassium) in the body can decrease to such an extent that it can also be influenced by certain medications. Due to the decrease in potassium concentration the effect of some heart medicines, such as digitoxin and digoxin, also used in heart failure, may increase, undesirable effects may occur.

Cassia senna

The garlic (Allium sativum) versatile herb of Hungarian cuisine, which it can also be recommended for the treatment of many diseases. However, caution should be exercised before someone starts taking garlic or garlic medicinals. Garlic can increase the effect of many synthetic antihypertensive agents (e.g. lisinopril, perindopril, amlodipine, felodipine), and when used together with anticoagulant drugs (e.g. acenocoumarol, warfarin) may increase the tendency to bleed.
