Yaoundé. Gabon was without its biggest star when the team showed up for a match against Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations on Friday night.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was thus not part of the squad at all, after a pre-match check showed that the Arsenal striker had what the Gabonese Football Association called “heart injuries”.

The same had two other Gabonese players, Axel Meye and Mario Lemina. It does not elaborate on what exactly it includes and how serious it is.

The Gabonese Football Federation writes on Twitter that the African Football Federation did not want to take any chances and therefore would not let the trio play against Ghana.

All three had just been ready to play again after being infected with coronavirus right up until the Africa Cup of Nations.

Gabon’s match on Friday is the team’s second at the tournament, but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has not been on the field yet.
