“Health minister backs it”: Dozens of interns signed resignation letters

Against the background of the new outline of interns, dozens of doctors specializing in hospitals have begun signing resignation letters to be submitted tomorrow, if they claim the outline for shortening shifts will not be extended to all medical professions across the country. At the same time, 500 interns, students and interns demonstrated in Tel Aviv on Tuesday. Five interns and protesters were arrested during the protest. It was only around four in the morning that the last of the detainees was released.

During the demonstration, the protesters blocked Ibn Gvirol Street and the street leading to the home of Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz. The demonstrators burned scrubbing uniforms, tied themselves with chains and held signs that read “Nitzan has forsaken us,” “Nitzan sings bad-tempered” and “We will not give up until we reap.” The protesters demanded that Horowitz lead the program to shorten shifts and not frustrate it.

The previous employment permit expires tomorrow, and the new permit must be signed by the Minister of Economy Orna Barbibai Expected to take effect. The Ministry of Health wants to make changes to the draft permit, which the interns claim “almost completely eliminates the outline for shortening shifts and questions any possibility of extending it beyond four wards in peripheral hospitals.”

They further explain that “these are a few dozen interns who will receive a shortening of shifts, while more than 90% will continue to do shifts of 26 hours.”

Dr. Ray Bitton, Chairman of the Prescription Physicians Association: “The Minister of Health took a tour of us and withdrew from all the agreements we reached. We came to demonstrate near his house so that he could look us in the eye and explain to us how it makes sense “% Of the interns will continue to do 26-hour shifts, but he did not have the courage to come and talk to us.”

“We will not give up and fight to the end. All responsibility for us is on the Minister of Health. And if by the end of the week he does not approve a proper outline to shorten the shifts, on Thursday 2,300 interns, trainees and students will submit their resignation letter,” she concluded.
