Health budget is better, but it won’t be enough, says Correia de Campos – Health

Despite the fact that Health sees a reinforcement in the State Budget for next year, approved this Friday, António Correia de Campos understands that this will be insufficient to keep up with expenses until the end of the year.

“It certainly won’t be enough”, he says in an interview with Jornal de Negócios and Antena 1, on the Conversa Capital program.

The former Minister of Health in the governments of António Guterres and José Sócrates remembers, namely, the beginning of negotiations for valuations in several professional careers in the sector.

“There are updates and everyone with an outstretched hand, naturally, because there have been many years, since 2009, with no visible salary improvements in the civil service”, he points out, recalling the “complaints in the street” that have been felt with strikes and demonstrations.

According to the former minister, “there is a situation of discomfort in many sectors, of underretribution, which now needs to be recovered”.

For 2023, the Government forecasts an increase in expenditure on health personnel of just 2.9%.

Manuel Pizarro, current Minister of Health, justified this value in Parliament with the fact that some improvements will still have an impact in 2022, without being reflected in an increase in expenses next year. In the already negotiated thawing of nurses’ careers, with assessment points recognized with effects retroacting to the beginning of this year, the Government says it estimates to spend 72 million euros this year.

For 2023, Health has 14.8 billion euros, 10.5% more than the initial forecast of the Budget for 2022. But, according to Correia de Campos, the increase will only be “slight” in view of the expenditure estimate for the end this year. “It’s not spectacular, but it’s better,” he says.
