Vincent Kaufmann is a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne specializing in mobility research. In an interview for the local newspaper Blick.ch came up with a shocking proposal on how to solve a problem that (and not only) Switzerland may be increasingly troubled by in the future: traffic jams.

Slower on the highway?

The local Minister of Transport, Albert Rösti, proposes to expand the road network, or highway by additional lanes. “No way. This would lead to new traffic flows. My suggestion is to reduce the speed on the highways,” Kaufmann said.

According to him, this would force people to drive less, for example to work, and at the same time use public transport more. Because of these traffic issues, Kaufmann is an advocate of working from home whenever possible. The ecological point of view is also important in this solution.

“We found that the maximum capacity is reached on the highway at a speed of 60 km/h. At a speed of 60 km/h, the route Geneva – Lausanne would take 1 hour and 10 minutes instead of 45 minutes. Reducing the speed limit on the motorway to 60 km/h would mean that people would drive less,” the expert explained to Blick.ch.

cynicism

Expert – non-expert, such a drastic solution would probably be taken with great displeasure by the general public. The Federal Council, on the other hand, wants to expand the A1 highway to at least six lanes on the Bern – Zurich and Lausanne – Geneva sections for better traffic flow.

According to Kaufmann, this expansion would also contradict the Paris climate agreement, which stipulates carbon neutrality by 2050.

“Nothing has happened in the last eight years. No one takes the deal seriously. This applies to all Western countries. Huge cynicism,” Kaufmann turned around.
