Half a century by the fire

Karaaslan continued his career, which he had been interested in since the age of 7, with his uncle when he lost his father when he was 12.

Master Gürsel, who started his career by pulling bellows in the furnace where the iron is heated, has been producing axes, claws and various agricultural tools for half a century.

Gürsel Karaaslan told Anadolu Agency (AA) that he loved this job and fell in love with blacksmithing.

Karaaslan, who stated that he had over half a century in the profession inherited from his father and uncle, said, “I come to my shop in the morning, mention the name of my master, Hazrat Davut, and start my work that way. In the evening, I go to my house and sit and rest in a healthy way. Is it because I work, thank God, I do not have any diseases.” said.

Karaaslan said that after he graduated from primary school, he learned from his father, who passed away, that he improved the blacksmithing with his uncle, and that he reached the level of mastery when he opened his own shop.

Expressing that blacksmithing is a difficult profession, Karaaslan continued his words as follows:

“Thanks to this blacksmithing, I brought up 4 children and educated them. All of them graduated from university. When we started this business, plowshares with which horses and oxen were plowed were common, we used to make them more often. Then things changed, tractors became widespread, those tools are not used. Now axes, knives, I make tools like hoes. I intend to continue this work for the rest of my life.”

Karaaslan stated that there is no interest in blacksmithing and that he regrets that young people do not prefer this profession.

Noting that even his own children do not want to do this profession, Karaaslan said, “I love young people, but they do not want to work in these jobs. Vocational high schools should be given importance before university in Turkey. Vocational high school students will come here, work with me for 3-5 months and see the profession.” he said.
