According to the DK, by reducing the number of post offices, postal coverage will be significantly lower in Hungary than in the European Union.

The opposition members criticized the narrowing of postal services, while the speakers of the government party justified the change with the increase in digital maturity in the general debate on the amendment of individual economic, asset management and postal laws at Thursday’s session of the Parliament, reports MTI.

According to the leader of the Democratic Coalition (DK), when the Gyurcsány government closed some post offices, Fidesz talked about the bleeding and destruction of the countryside and called for demonstrations. Now many times that happens in terms of mail closing. Zsolt Gréczy emphasized that the post office in a small settlement is part of the local cultural life, a meeting place. So now the government is closing another forum from the people.

The representative also objected to the termination of the possibility of buying newspapers at the post office, which would eliminate the opportunity for people living in small settlements to access new information. By reducing the number of post offices, postal coverage will be significantly lower in Hungary than in the European Union: there will be 1.6 offices per 10,000 inhabitants, compared to 2.91 in Europe. That is why the DK will not support the proposal.

The representative of the Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP) called the comparison of the situation before 2010 with the current one a “typical Gyurcsány method”. According to István Hollik, this does not make sense because the world has changed radically in terms of postal services even just looking at the last five years. When before 2010, the Fidesz objected to the closure of post offices and requested the Gyurcsány government to reduce the availability of postal services.

The KDNP politician asked the opposition to support the proposal.
