Sociálna poisťovňa (SP) is to provide its policyholders with paternity benefits from the beginning of November this year, it is a new type of maternity benefit. It is intended for fathers and, after meeting the conditions, they will be able to receive it for a maximum of 14 calendar days in the period of six weeks after the birth of the child. SP spokesman Martin Kontúr informed about this on Wednesday.
How much can they get?
The amendment to the Act on Social Insurance, which was approved by the National Council of the Slovak Republic and is awaiting the President’s signature, is supposed to bring something new. According to SP, the new benefit is intended to contribute to the personal involvement of fathers in the postpartum care of a newborn child and to strengthen the bonds between the child, mother and father in the close period after the birth of the child.
The maximum amount of the benefit this year for two weeks is to be 604.50 euros.
If a child or a mother with a child is hospitalized within six weeks of giving birth, the period of paternity benefit would be extended by the period of hospitalization. “After receiving the paternity benefit for two weeks, fathers will be able to receive the maternity benefit as well,” the spokesman explained. In principle, they would have 26 weeks left to draw it for the same child when caring for one child, and they can claim it until the child is three years old.
It also depends on the number of children
Maternity pay for fathers would be divided into two parts, paternal pay, which could be taken regardless of whether the mother would draw maternity pay for the same child or parental allowance during that period, and another 26 weeks in principle when caring for one child up to three years of his age. If the father did not claim paternity leave, he could receive maternity leave for the entire period of 28 weeks as before, after meeting the conditions. If it is a single father, he can draw 31 weeks of maternity leave, the insurance company explained.
If she takes care of two or more children, she can receive maternity leave for 37 weeks, but no earlier than six weeks after giving birth, if the mother is no longer receiving maternity or parental allowance from the Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family for the same child.
“The child’s father, who claims maternity leave no earlier than six weeks after the date of birth, will be entitled to maternity leave, regardless of whether he was entitled to paternity leave in the previous period,” Kontúr concluded.
