Gunther Werks turns the last air-cooled Porsche 911 Turbo up to 700 horsepower – Auto-Motor

Last year, the Gunther Werks workshop appeared at the Monterey Car Week event series with the 911 (993) Speedster, and this year they reached out to this car again, Project Tornado is a completely rebuilt version of the last air-cooled Porsche 911 (993) Turbo. They made a completely new carbon body, only the doors were left as factory, this was justified not only by the appearance, but also by the increased cooling demand of the engine. In addition, the curb weight was reduced by 227 kg compared to the factory data. They found an elegant solution for the installation of a tablet/smartphone, a particularly strong magnetic holder (it can withstand race track forces) was placed in front of the gear lever.

The displacement of the 6-cylinder, air-cooled turbo boxer engine was increased to 4.0 liters, a flat fan used in LeMans racing cars was installed in the engine compartment, the size of the intercoolers was also increased, and a Motec engine controller was installed. The result is 608 hp in street form, but there is also a “Competition” mode, when 710 hp/759 Nm are available to the driver. Only the rear wheels are driven, the gearbox is 6-speed, manual, and the suspension not only widens the track, but also includes electronically controlled shock absorbers, which can then be adjusted by the driver while driving. The Gunther Werks Tornado is completely tailored to the customer, for example the carbon shell seat is not adjustable, and the custom-made padding “squeezes” the person in – as an extra, you can request a more traditional seat with an adjustable backrest, with normal padding, which can then be quickly retrofitted as needed. Only 25 examples will be produced, the purchase price will be determined based on individual needs, but it is an “almost 7-figure” dollar amount.
