Guimarães launches edition of “Os Lusíadas” illustrated by 10 women

“Os Lusíadas”, by Luís Vaz de Camões, will have an edition illustrated by 10 women, with “text updating” for contemporary language. The work is launched as part of the third edition of the Biennial of Illustration of Guimarães (BIG) and is the result of a partnership between the municipality of Guimarães and the rectory of the University of Minho, with the collaboration of Editora Kalandraka.

According to the artistic director of BIG, Tiago Manuel, “Portugal sets an example, because it is the first time that an edition has been done with concerted work and completely done by women in a canonical work”.

“The choice of artists resulted from a list of 30 authors who were then selected by an independent jury to choose the 10 artists, in a transparent process and here are some of the best Portuguese illustrators”, says Tiago Manuel.

The new edition is an evocation of the role of women in national culture and, in particular, in illustration, completely illustrated by 10 female artists: Carolina Celas, Joana Rêgo, Joana Estrela, Madalena Matoso, Amanda Baeza, Inês Machado, Mariana Rio, Catarina Gomes, Marta Madureira and Marta Monteiro. The literary direction and setting of the text to current Portuguese was the responsibility of the full professor at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra, Rita Marnoto, and the design was in charge of Joana Pires.

It is “a more contemporary work” and “not only for young people, but also for society in general”, stresses the artistic director of BIG.

The vice-president of the Chamber of Guimarães and councilor for Culture, on the other hand, highlights “a differentiated view” of the work by Os Lusíadas.

“This illustrated edition of Os Lusíadas marks this edition of BIG, worked by 10 women, and guarantees added value to this work with a new vision and in an illustrated way. This edition will reach schools and we hope that it will continue to call for reading and a new interpretation”, says Adelina Pinto.

According to the rector of the University of Minho, Rui Vieira de Castro, the complex literary work of Luís Camões “is not always perceived by society in the way it should be”, therefore, the new edition of the epic poem by Luís Vaz de Camões wants to “ return this work in a way that makes it more understandable for the generality of people and especially for our young people”.

Launched by the publisher Kalandraka, dedicated to the publication of illustrated works, the first edition of the illustrated version of “Os Lusíadas”, which will be available from October 21, will have 1,200 copies, with 600 available on the book market, at one unit price of 35 euros.
