For more than a year, the Daugavpils Regional Hospital has been fully-fledged with Doctor Clowns, who support, amuse and inspire little patients who have to undergo long-term treatment here.

In the context of a pandemic, positive emotions and good mood are now needed more than ever by the patients of the Children’s Department of the hospital, and their parents, and the medical staff, says Grigory Semyonov, head of the DRB.

Two girls – medical clown Christina Semyonova and Tatiana Stelmaka (Dr. Anabel and Uka) appeared in DRB last summer. Finding them, according to the administration, was rather difficult.

Before starting to work with children, candidates for doctor-clowns undergo a multi-stage selection. Then they study and practice for 9 months, after which they are sent to specific hospitals. Currently, there are only 45 professional clown doctors in Latvia.

It is believed that few can master professional medical clowning and become Doctor Clown. In the course of strict selection, people with high emotional intelligence, attentive, psychologically mature, able to find a common language with children are admitted here. They also need to have good acting skills and be able to improvise.

As Grigory Semyonov explained, the Clowns Doctors have a great responsibility: they help restore the mental health of patients.

«Doctors Clown are purely enthusiastic, but they are fully functional at our hospital. It is especially important for children now, without the support of relatives, to escape from the long and painful process of treatment. Doctor Clown takes the child away from the realized need for procedures by playing, distracts him from painful sensations. We receive only positive feedback from our Doctor Clowns. They are very helpful in treating children.“, – said the head of the DRB.

There are medical clowns only for donations, but they, according to Grigory Semyonov, are only enough for costumes for Doctor Clowns and toys.

By the way, our medical clowns and DRB took part in the charity marathon of Doctors of Clowns, which passed through many Children’s departments of Latvian hospitals, drawing attention to children who have been on outpatient treatment for a long time.
