A few days ago, Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) presented to potential buyers the ZelEPS project, ie the opportunity to buy “green energy” produced from renewable sources, and thus reduce carbon dioxide pollution.

– EPS produces green energy in 15 hydropower plants with a total installed capacity of three gigawatts, which is 38% of EPS’s energy11 potential. At the moment, we produce green energy only in hydroelectric power plants, although other available sources will also be used – said the director for the development of the free market in EPS, Bratislav Dzombić.

He reminded that EPS has great experience and a long tradition of producing electricity from renewable sources, because the first hydroelectric power plants in Serbia were built in the 19th century, immediately after the first such power plant was built in Niagara.

Dzombic stated that EPS concluded the first contract on the delivery of green energy at the end of 2018, immediately after Serbia adopted European standards in that area.

– The delivery of green energy is proven by a guarantee of origin which serves to confirm to the bench that the energy it pays for is produced in renewable sources. EPS registered all its power plants in the Ministry of Mining and Energy, and received a guarantee of origin from the Electric Network of Serbia (EMS) based on the read monthly production in renewable sources for every megawatt hour of produced electricity – Dzombic emphasized.

He said that EPS has a large amount of green energy that can meet the needs of customers.

– Guarantees of origin issued in Serbia belong to the European standard, ie it is completely the same as in the EU. In 2019, EMS became a full member of the European Association of Bodies for Issuing Guarantees of Origin, which means that our guarantees of origin can be used in the EU, ie that our market of guarantees of origin is fully integrated into the European one – said Džombić.

He pointed out that the green energy produced by EPS is easily available, and the procedure for contracting supply is simple.

– Contracts are concluded as well as conventional ones. No additional paperwork is required, and the existing contract is not terminated, but annexed with the same energy price. It is only specified that energy is consumed exclusively from renewable sources – said Dzombic.

The first buyer of the ZelEPS package was Procredit Bank, and so far this energy has been bought mainly by companies engaged in industrial production, according to EPS.

It is added that among them are large companies such as Lidl, Tigar, British American Tobacco, Zdravlje from Leskovac, Strauss Adriatic, Froneri Adriatic and many others.

EPS points out that the number of customers interested in ZelEPS is constantly growing and that ten times more green energy was sold last year than in 2019.

The amount of contracted energy from renewable sources for this year is currently 50% higher than in 2020, according to EPS.
