Suara.com – Gray hair is often a sign of someone’s aging. However, many people who are still at a young age also have gray hair.
A new study published Tuesday in the journal eLife found that stress significantly affects hair graying.
The good news is that relaxing can reverse the trend. Researchers from Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons reached this conclusion by analyzing the individual hairs of 14 volunteers compared with stress diaries that were each kept.
Their method is comparable to analyzing tree rings: By looking at the fraction of each human hair, which reflects about an hour of hair growth, scientists were able to find a correlation between time of stress and time of graying of hair.
Not only that, they also found that periods of relaxation correlated with gray hair that grew darker.
“There’s one person who goes on vacation, and five strands of hair on that person’s head go dark again during the holidays, synchronized in time,” said professor of behavioral medicine and senior study author Martin Picard, Ph.
“Just as the rings on a tree trunk store information about the last decades in a tree’s life, our hair contains information about our biological history.”
The possibility of hair re-pigmentation, the authors note, is only possible selectively among certain age demographics.
“Based on our mathematical modeling, we think hair needs to reach a threshold before turning gray,” says Picard.
“In middle age, when hair approaches that threshold due to biological age and other factors, stress will push it over the threshold and transition to gray. But we don’t think that reducing stress in a 70-year-old who has been graying for years will darken their hair, or increasing stress in a 10-year-old will be enough to get their hair past the gray threshold.”
