grand design galaxy in Veronica’s Hair

The Image of the Week feature on the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope website features a stunning snapshot of the spiral galaxy M99. This is the so-called “grand design” galaxy. Such objects have pronounced spiral arms emanating from the center of the galaxy. Only about 10% of all spiral galaxies fall into the grand design category.

The named structure is located at a distance of approximately 42 million light years from Earth in the constellation Coma Berenices. The photograph was taken with the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) aboard the Hubble Observatory. This camera captures images in the visible, near infrared, near and mid ultraviolet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The published image clearly shows the structure of the galaxy. This is a bright central part, as well as sleeves that twist counterclockwise. You can see the high resolution image below – click to enlarge.
