Government reinforces call for vaccination and ensures all scenarios in view of the increase in cases – Coronavirus

António Lacerda Sales, Deputy Secretary of State and Health, today reinforced the call for vaccination of the elderly and assured that “all scenarios will always be open” as to the need for measures to respond to the increase in cases of covid-19.

“Our first concern is exactly this: vaccinate, vaccinate, vaccinate, because we realize that it is very important that the most vulnerable groups of our population can be vaccinated as quickly as possible, precisely because of the increase in cases that we are seeing in Europe, across the whole of Europe. Europe, so we have to defend our population, we have to defend our country”, stated António Lacerda Sales.

As part of a visit to the Odivelas vaccination center, installed in the Multipurpose Pavilion of this municipality in the district of Lisbon, at 12:00 pm, accompanied by the Director-General of Health, Graça Freitas, the coordinator of the coordinating nucleus of the vaccination plan against Covid-19, Colonel Carlos Penha-Gonçalves, and the Mayor of Odivelas, Hugo Martins (PS), the Deputy Secretary of State and Health revealed that today, in just over two hours, they have already been administered throughout the country 12,000 vaccines against covid-19 and 17,000 vaccines against flu.

Asked about the need for measures, including border control in Natal, to respond to the increase in cases of covid-19 in Portugal, namely the forecast that the country will surpass, within 15 to 30 days, the 240 cases of infection at 14 days per 100 1,000 inhabitants, Lacerda Sales replied: “what is needed is for us to carry out an assessment and consideration based on the epidemiological evolution, I think this is what is very important and always open up all the scenarios based on this evolution”.

“It’s having several scenarios depending on what our epidemiological evolution is, because we are not an island, we know that cases are growing in Europe, so since we are not an island and obviously having connections with other countries, we have to defend ourselves obviously and, therefore, all scenarios will always be open, but also always monitored by what are the indicators of epidemiological evolution” reiterated the government official.

On the possibility of returning to restrictive measures, the Deputy Secretary of State and Health stressed “all scenarios are really all scenarios”, noting that, at the moment, there are countries in Europe that are retreating and returning to other restrictions.

“We, at this moment, as it is known, still have a moderate evolution of cases, we have about 135 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days and with a transmission rate of 1.15”, he indicated.
