Google Will Voluntarily Help Regulate AI in the European Union

Company Google (or parent company Alphabet) a European Commission agreed that they would jointly solve the issue of AI regulation or artificial intelligence. And it should be a voluntary pact and not the result of some kind of coercion. The reason for this agreement is said to be the common concern that artificial intelligence is taking over various industries and joining our daily lives at a very high rate. Similar initiatives like European AI Act are created not only in the EU, but also in the USA, for example.

Thierry Breton, head of the industrial section of the European Commission, and Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, met in Brussels for this matter. Due to the topic of regulation, the EU wants to create a coalition composed of European and non-European companies. “Sundar and I agreed that you we can’t afford to wait, when AI regulation really starts to take effect, and that we will work with all AI developers on a voluntary basis now, before the statutory deadline,” said Breton. At the same time, he asked EU members and legislators to complete the work on AI rules by the end of the year.

In addition to Breton, EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager also met with Pichai. It called for a “voluntary agreement on universal rules for AI”, emphasizing the completion of the EU’s draft AI law. The commissioner also announced partnership with the United States with the goal of setting minimum standards for AI.
