Google shuts down the game service Stadia

Google has officially confirmed that they will put their gaming service Stadia, which was about being able to play streaming games on all kinds of devices. The service will end on January 18, 2023, and players will have access to their game libraries until that date. Google will also refund all Stadia hardware and software purchases.

Stadia’s Phil Harrison has in a statement thanked all the dedicated players and developers, but that the platform never managed to gain the impact and traction that was expected.

“We will refund all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store and all game and add-on content purchases made through the Stadia store,” Harrison said. “We expect to have the majority of repayments completed by mid-January 2023.”

Stadia was launched in November 2019 but has repeatedly suffered setbacks. As early as February 2021, it shut down its own game developer Stadia Games and Entertainment, and various attempts to license the technology for cloud gaming to other companies in different ways were also unsuccessful.

Some of the technology that has been used together with Stadia will remain in various forms, including with YouTube, Google Play and ventures into augmented reality.
