Google releases first beta of Android 13

After a phone is registered for the beta program, there will be an OTA update with Android 13. Google’s blog post is aimed at developers and hardly mentions any news that is of interest to users.

A novelty in the beta version, however, is that we can give apps access to a specific type of media files, instead of all types of files. Apps can request access to pictures and videos, to videos, or to audio files.

Sharp Android 13 is expected to land sometime in August, with regular beta releases until then.

Previously, when an app wanted to read shared media files in local storage, it needed to request the READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission, which gave access to all types of media files.

To bring more transparency and control to users, we’re introducing a new set of permissions with more granular scope for accessing shared media files.
