‘Google Maps makes strategic military facilities in Russia visible’ (update)

Google Maps has made Russia’s strategic military facilities visible to users, the Ukrainian military reported today, but Google insists those images were available before.

Searches on Google Maps to show fully accessible images of military bases, intercontinental ballistic missiles, launch pads, naval facilities and key command posts across Russia.

The resolution is about 0.5 meters per pixel.

Some of the images include the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, a nuclear weapons storage facility near Murmansk, submarines on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Far East, and a military air base in the western city of Kursk, just 150 kilometers from the Russian-Ukrainian border.

Satellite images of military facilities are traditionally blurred or rendered in lower quality by Google Maps, usually at the request of authorities.
