Google I/O 2022 round-up
I/O is Google’s annual developer meeting. Traditionally, the event is aimed at software makers, but regularly there are also plenty of interesting news for the general public. We discuss these in a nutshell below.
Android 13 officially announced
We start with the big star of the show. Android 13 is the logical successor to Android 12 and will be released later this year, probably in August or September. The Pixel phones, which Google makes itself, will receive the update immediately at that time.
Android 13 is primarily a refined version of its predecessor. The Material You design will become more refined, among other things: you can have app icons colored with the theme that you use on your smartphone. Another focal point of Android 13 is privacy and security. For example, you can give apps access to certain media types.

Google announces Pixel 6a and already shows Pixel 7
Furthermore, Google has officially announced the Pixel 6a. This smartphone is similar in design to its more expensive brothers, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. For example, he copied the signature camera island on the back.
The Google Pixel 6a has a 6.2-inch screen, two cameras on the back and runs on Google’s homemade Tensor chip. It costs 449 dollars (459 euros in Germany) and is not officially released in the Netherlands. In due course you can probably get the device to our little country via gray import.
Google also gave a preview of the Google Pixel 7 and Google Pixel 7 Pro during the I/O keynote. The upcoming flagships will be released this fall and will be redesigned. In particular, the horizontal ‘camera stripe’ on the back is being overhauled. Google will officially announce the Pixel 7 (Pro) at a later date.

Pixel Watch is Google’s first smartwatch
We close with surprises, as Google also showed the highly anticipated Pixel Watch. Google’s first smartwatch has a sleek, round design and is packed with features to keep an eye on your health.
The Pixel Watch will be released simultaneously with the Pixel 7 series later this year. Google’s smart watch is not officially coming to the Netherlands. We don’t know how expensive the Pixel Watch will be.
The latest surprise is that Google will release a tablet next year. This mysterious gadget doesn’t have a name yet, so for now we’ll keep it on Pixel Tablet. The company didn’t disclose any specifications, so there’s no other option than to be patient.
