Google, Apple, Microsoft and Mozilla are working together on better add-ons for web browsers

Google, Microsoft, Apple i Mozilla oformili su WebExtensions Community Group (WECG) to standardize browser add-ons to improve both security and performance.

The four companies want to develop web standards for browser extensions, standards that will be guided by a common set of HTML and W3C TAG design principles.

These principles include, but are not limited to, “compatibility, performance, security, privacy, portability, sustainability, and well-defined behavior.”

Future web standards for browser add-ons will use a foundation built on existing models of extensions and APIs supported by Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, and Safari.

The group will work on a shared vision of browser extensions and standardization, with a focus on making it easier for developers to create extensions by defining a consistent model and common core of functionality, APIs, and permissions, as well as a performance-enhancing architecture that is even more secure and abusive.

WECG will not deal with the standardization or coordination of signing or delivery of extensions, as these are not the goals of the group.

Each browser manufacturer will continue to operate its own completely independent add-on store, with its own policy.

Apple, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla have invited other browser manufacturers, add-on developers and stakeholders to join the group.
