Good sunflower grazing is expected, but the old fear is still there

In July, beekeepers expect sunflower grazing, which is one of the most important, but at the same time the most deadly grazing. Although sunflowers often “take out the situation” when other pastures fail, it is inevitable that this pasture will often be the cause of great deaths of bee colonies. We talked with Rodoljub Zivadinovic, the president of the Association of Beekeeping Organizations of Serbia, about what kind of sunflower grazing is expected next month, but also what risks it brings with it.

It is predicted that this year’s sunflower grazing will be one of the most record-breaking

Our interlocutor points out that the beginning of sunflower grazing depends on the weather, and since we are affected by tropical days, ie high temperatures, its beginning is expected in a few days, for probably a dozen in early locations. As he says, there will be an overlap with lipovom pašom as usual, but we have yet to see how unusual and sudden weather conditions will affect the vegetation.

“Sunflower is looking for good rain, which we had in principle, so it is expected that the pasture will be good. This plant even in bad years it can always provide a certain yield, so that is one of the most stable pasture for beekeepers. For a couple of years, the sunflower was not even average, but far below average, but it was still there. We have positive expectations and we hope that this pasha will be one of them more record-breaking“, Emphasized Zivadinovic, who added that the most famous locations for that pasture are certainly Banat places towards the border with Romania. Most beekeepers move bees right there.

Seed treatment with neonicotinoids is a major threat to bees

When it comes to the fear of sunflower grazing that is the result killing bees on that plant, our interlocutor points out that fear exists and that it is great.

“We do not have a well-developed system control of seed treatment because as you know it is absolutely forbidden by means from the group of neonicotinoids. These are strong insecticides that can pass through the plant and reach the nectar, and practically poison the bees. In addition, the doses are now even bigger than before, the one who stumbles upon such a plot will really have big problems “, the president of the Association of Beekeeping Organizations of Serbia emphasized.

The reason for that, he claims, is that the seeds were previously treated at the factory where the doses were respected, and today when it is treated on black, wild, illegal higher doses are always placed in various mixers.

“We had situations where when the seeds were officially treated, the bees went through sunflower pasture with a decent amount of honey, enter the winter all the most normal and during its duration slowly they disappear because winter bees eat stored nectar and pollen. So we have the acute, the visible, as well chronic poisoning during the winter. This is a really big problem that cannot be solved in any way “, said our interlocutor.

High temperatures have a bad effect on both linden and meadow pasture

As he says, they are asking the authorities to bring the appropriate ones bylaws to determine the field control procedure, to determine the level of neonicotinoids when the plant sprouts and begins to grow, according to a suspicion or a random sample, or best of both by taking samples.

In his opinion, it is the only and right way to destroy such plots and be an example to everyone else in order to bring order. He points out that if the whole of Europe can not use neonicotinoids for seed treatment, it means that it is possible because they also carry out their production successfully.

When it comes to linden pasha, he points out that he has data from yesterday that there was a minus on the scales.

“Lipa has yet to honey, we’ll see what happens, too high temperatures will be noticed these days, and that not good for linden. There is a large and above all sudden temperature shock. We are very afraid for livadsku himself on high mountains above 1000 meters. It all seemed that the pasture would be great, but now we have too high temperatures. At these heights, the temperatures are much lower, but they will reach there as well 30, 32 degrees according to the forecasts we follow “, he pointed out at the end.
