Generating hydrogen fuel with humidity in the air will soon be possible thanks to this device

There are several alternatives to fossil fuels and among them is hydrogen. This is an element that has several advantages such as not producing harmful emissions and can also be used to store energy from solar, wind and tidal sources. Due to this great potential, a group of scientists devised a prototype device to create hydrogen fuel.

Separating hydrogen from water is not an easy task. It requires complex technologies and also depends on pure fresh water. Another disadvantage here is that fresh water cannot be found everywhere.

To address these drawbacks, these scientists created a pilot device that collects water in the air to split it into oxygen and hydrogen.

The great advantage of this device is that it can work properly in regions where the humidity in the air is very low.

How does the device to create hydrogen fuel work?

The scientists created a system to use the humidity of the air for the production of hydrogen through electrolysis. Specifically, the device is a direct air electrolysis module (DAE) that works with renewable energy and has the ability to separate the two components of water: hydrogen and oxygen.

In one test, the researchers ran five electrolyzers using solar power. The electrodes go on each side of the water collection unit, while a kind of sponge collects the water from the air. This sponge is also used to store electrolytes.

Both electrodes are isolated from the air, which means that the hydrogen and oxygen can be collected as pure gases once the split has occurred.

After 12 days of testing, the researchers managed to get their device working successfully. In addition, its creators clarified that it can work correctly in completely dry environments with a relative humidity of 4%. But above all, it can create environmentally friendly green hydrogen.

Since it can be used anywhere, even in arid sites, this device is emerging as a viable alternative to the scarcity of fossil fuels.

As its creators explained, your device is still in its early stages, so it will need improvements and extensions.

But this prototype device is not the only way to create hydrogen fuel. In recent years there have been advances in the production of hydrogen fuel with the use of aluminum and gallium to split hydrogen and oxygen molecules in water. Which means that science is doing much more than is believed to offer sustainable proposals.
