The NBA 2K21 basketball game has appeared in online stores. As one of the first games available for the current game console as well as for the new batch, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
Striking difference: for the current game consoles the game costs 59.95 euros, now the standard new price for games. For the new game consoles, the price has risen by ten, to 69.95 euros.
Last price increase in 2005
More game publishers would consider such a price increase, Yoshio Osaki of market researcher IDG told GamesIndustry.biz. Watching movies and series has become more expensive in the past decade, while games prices have been standing still since 2005, Osaki notes.
The last increase was in the step from the PS2 and Xbox to the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2005 and 2006. Even then prices rose by ten, from just under 50 euros to the current 59.95 euros.
Games make 2 to 3 times more expensive
Since 2005, game development prices have risen by 200 to 300 percent, Osaki said. Games are getting bigger and longer, look more realistic and make more use of real actors. While game prices remained the same, movie ticket prices rose 39 percent and Netflix prices rose 100 percent.
“Even with the rise to 69.99 for next-gen, the price increase between 2005 and 2020 is only 17 percent, much lower than other comparisons,” said Oksai. The analyst expects what many other publishers also consider a higher price, although initially it will mainly be applied to really large titles.
Digital versions of games have already cost 5 to 10 euros more in their own online stores of PlayStation and Xbox than as a disc in the store. It is not yet known whether those digital prices will also rise with the arrival of the new game consoles.
