Furnishing in vintage style: in Milan an apartment with a retro flavor

From former accommodation-office for railway workers to elegant and bright home. We are in the Milanese district Nettle, among the areas of Milan which, together with Dergano and NoLo, in recent years has been attracting more and more young people. The apartment of approx 100 square meters on the mezzanine floor, opening onto a private garden which in the city is a real dream, has been renovated by the studio META for a family – a tattoo artist, her cinematographer husband and their little daughter – who wanted a home from classic taste and timeless, able to accommodate theirs collection of vintage furnishings purchased at the flea markets or inherited over the years.

At the time of purchase, the house was in very bad condition. “To keep costs down, we have kept the existing division between the living and sleeping areas, but we have knocked down the partitions to create a kitchen with a living room all in one »explains architect Caterina Marazzi, founder and director of META with Luca Miserocchi. “The owners wished interiors full of contamination with the past, for example, they would have wanted to preserve the cement tiles laid on the floor, which we had to remove to build the new systems. In their place we opted for a parquet in cabreuva, a disused essence but very beautiful because it is rich in nuances, laid in a small format with a triple Italian spine. As in the popular houses of the past there is no skirting, but the lower part of the walls has been marked with a coat of dark enamel. The porte they are not the original ones, but they have moldings and a deliberately imperfect rough finish. Nothing has been left to chance, even the electric plates are a classic model: everything is new but historicized, the whole is familiar, warm, welcoming ».

Designer accessories, modern antiques and mass-produced furniture create a winning mix, which defines the relaxed mood of the House. The kitchen is exemplary in this sense, with IKEA columns, base units and wall units and a custom-made solid wood top to integrate the washbasin and continue in place of the large window sill; front, the dining table is an old carpenter’s bench that the owner has cleaned and painted red, while the upholstered chairs come from a 1950s bar. In addition to the living room with a conversation area in the center and a piano, the small study it has two workstations and a sofa bed perfect for welcoming guests.

The most private part of the house consists of two bedrooms, the master bedroom with a wooden bed painted blue and blue walls, the child’s bedroom painted in pastel pink. The two bathrooms are well-kept, both retro: pastel green with bathtub, the main one, the service one covered with glossy black and white tiles
