Rotterdam. In the small apartment of two young designers it is time for workout quotidiano. The rubber mat unrolled in the living room, the smartphone connected to the video of the favorite fitness trainer. The tools are also in pole position: a coat hanger and a coffee table. No kettlebells, weights, barbells or very sad – and in the long run not very effective – bottles of water: space is limited and we need to optimize.
You train with Furfit,
a series of five hybrid elements that blend the ergonomics of the most popular sports equipment with the practical needs of contemporary living and, above all, compatible with the aesthetics of your home.
The idea came to the Italian Luca Beltrame of HO-TT (freshly graduated in architecture, experiences in prestigious studios such as Kengo Kuma and MVRDV) and his partner Saba Nabavi Tafreshi, also an architect: «During the first weeks of lockdown, with gyms and offices closed, like many we started training at home, but living in a typical Dutch apartment the spaces were not too generous. So we started studying a solution that would allow us to find active use to those accessories that otherwise would have hindered our movements during the rest of the day ».
So just rotate it horizontally high stool Iasian to use it as a barbell: the bar that supports the seat weighs 12 kg and the sinuous curvature facilitates the grip. Or unscrew the legs of the Heracles coffee table (the screw system is very simple) to turn them into weights of different shades.
Nell’Epimedes coat hanger, the 500 gram 2 kilo peg set replaces the dumbbells, while the top of the side table Idas comes off and becomes a gem kettlebell. Finally the barre push-up: Paeonaesus, a pair of stools from the hemispherical seat perfect to be placed on the floor.
Pop colors and sinuous shapes would appeal to Jane Fonda, with her legendary 80s aerobics video lessons. innovation comes from materials: «
We have imagined three collections with different combinations and price ranges. Colored resins and terrazzo in the basic Timeless version, wood and brass for the Precious line and with recycled materials for the Sustainable line ».
Tasteful choices, which do not neglect the durability of tools: «These materials are not conventionally used in gyms and require the support of components more resistant to optimize its performance. In the oak wood parts, for example, we have provided a metal reinforcement core. While the resins would require the addition of additives to make them more resistant to shocks ».
I know Furfit it is not the first project to combine design and home fitness (among the most recent, we recall the precious dumbbells Specific Weight by Sara Ricciardi and Atelier Biagetti’s magnificent Body Building collectible works), given the current pandemic, it may not be the last. To date, the five objects are looking for a producer, in the hope of being able to present them to the Milan Design Week scheduled for September.
