From Friday, 11 June, herring fishing and fishing with box traps in the Baltic Sea in Lääne County will be suspended.

“The annual permitted amount of herring in Lääne County is being exhausted, which is why both herring fishing and the use of box traps as a fishing gear must be stopped there. Herring can also be caught in the Gulf of Riga, where coastal fishermen in Pärnu and Saare counties have been allocated 1,545 tonnes of herring without catching it. In addition, coastal fishermen of Harju, Hiiu and Saare counties can catch a little over 48 tons of herring in other parts of the coastal sea, “said Minister Urmas Kruuse.

According to a government decree, the annual allowable catch of herring in the Baltic Sea, except in the Gulf of Riga, on the basis of a fisherman’s fishing permit is 1461 tonnes. If 1161 tonnes are filled, an additional 50 tonnes of herring may be caught in Saare, Hiiu, Lääne and Harju counties, and 100 tonnes in Lääne-Viru and Ida-Viru counties.

Following the exhaustion of the 1161-tonne herring quota allocated jointly to these six counties, another 45 tonnes of herring have been caught in Lääne County yesterday. As a result, the amount of herring allocated to these counties is running out and fishing must be stopped.

At the beginning of June, herring fishing in Ida-Viru and Lääne-Viru counties was suspended due to quota exhaustion. With the cessation of herring fishing, fishing with box traps is stopped, because when fishing with box traps, it is not possible to prevent large quantities of herring from falling into the traps.
