Liberec – In the former quarry in the center of Liberec, an ice wall about 15 meters high is accessible from today. There are three climbing lines on it, the administrator of the climbing arena Pavel Pfeifer told ČTK. “The ice is ten to 15 centimeters thick,” he added.
The formation of an ice wall was made possible by severe frosts in the previous days, despite the flooding that meteorologists predict should last for several days. Pfeifer assumes that the wall should be in operation at least until Sunday.
Those interested in climbing must book an appointment in advance. There are four three-hour blocks for each day from 8:00 to 20:00. “There are still some vacancies,” Pfeifer said. One line is for two climbers, there will be six of them in the area at once. According to the administrator, the average climber will climb the wall in eight to ten minutes. “Otherwise, it’s a three-minute affair, and professional athletes, when we had races here years ago, had between 14 and 18 seconds,” Pfeifer added.
The former Na Bídě quarry in Mlýnská Street has been long-term leased by climbers from the Liberec City Hall. They first lured ice climbing seven years ago, the last time it was two years ago. Last year’s warm winter did not allow the creation of an ice wall. The quarry in Liberec is the only place in the Liberec region where an artificial ice wall is made in winter. In the open air, two places in the Jizera Mountains are popular among climbers in the region, the Štolpišský icefall near Hejnice and the icefall in the former quarry in Oldřichov v Hájích. But usually only experienced climbers can get there, amateurs can also try the Liberec area. At the exit, everyone is secured.
