Four-month-old baby admitted to São João shows improvement and is transferred to Hospital de Chaves – Portugal

After improving the condition of the 4-month-old baby, who was hospitalized at Hospital de São João, in Porto, he was transferred this Tuesday to Hospital de Chaves.

The baby’s progressive recovery no longer requires special medical care. The transfer took place at 10 am this Tuesday and the child will receive medical care during the trip.

The ill-treated baby was first admitted to Hospital de Chaeves, but was later taken to Hospital de São João, in Porto, where he has been hospitalized since the 4th of this month.

The hospital unit communicated the case to the Public Prosecutor’s Office as it considers that the lesions that Santiago presents are compatible with shaken baby syndrome. The baby’s mother, Beatriz Mendes, 19, discards responsibilities and says that her son has always been treated well. “He was never abused in his life. I have witnesses to how he was always treated well. He never had any marks of abuse,” she said. Santiago’s mother says that August 4, when the baby was admitted to the hospital, was one of the worst days of her life. “It was midday when I noticed that he was not well. I picked him up and his head fell off. I only had time to hold him by the chin. I began to cry desperately. While I called INEM, it was my companion who gave him the first first aid and managed to revive him.”

Beatriz Mendes says she has been with the baby in the hospital. “Doctors still don’t know what happened. They are doing tests to see what happened. Doctors go there during the week and say it has improved,” she said.
