Former Mayor Jahangir’s mother Joy in Gazipur

Former mayor Jahangir Alam’s mother Zayeda Khatun won the Gazipur City Corporation election by defeating the ruling Awami League’s boat symbol candidate.

Returning Officer Faridul Islam announced the results of all 480 centers at 2:30 am after the day-long polling on Thursday.

Zayeda Khatun, an independent candidate of the table clock symbol for the post of mayor, got 2 lakh 38 thousand 934 votes.

His nearest rival Azmat Ulla Khan of Awami League got 2 lakh 22 thousand 737 votes in boat symbol.

Gazi Ataur Rahman of the Islamic Movement, who is in the third place, got 45 thousand 352 votes. Independent candidate Sarkar Shahnoor Islam Roni (Roni Sarkar) got 23 thousand 265 votes in elephant symbol.

The result was announced from the result collection and display center set up at the city’s Bangtaj Auditorium.

With the announcement of the result of the vote, the cheers of the table clock supporters spread there. Mother’s chief election agent Jahangir was also present there.

Although Awami League candidate Azmat was not at the fruit distribution center, his supporters were present.

Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were used in each of the 480 polling stations in Gazipur.

The total number of voters in this largest city corporation of the country was 11 lakh 79 thousand. Election officials estimated the voter turnout to be around 60 percent till noon. However, the overall voting rate is about 50 percent.

Polling went on from 8 am to 8 pm on Thursday without any disturbance.

Election Commissioner Md. Jahangir complained that the voters were being intimidated during the polls, but overall he was satisfied with the election. Alamgir said, “We are very pleased. People and voters are satisfied. Candidates are satisfied. Your representatives (journalists) are satisfied. They gave this response in the media.”
