The Odyssey OLED G8 display is Samsung’s first OLED gaming display. Compared to competitors, the image is conjured up in televisions with the acclaimed QD-OLED technology (Quantum Dot OLED), which gives an extra boost to the color scheme and brightness.
The metallic structure of the screen is stylish. Due to its size, the 34-inch ultra-wide-angle screen fits well on an ordinary table and it covers the field of vision well enough. Behind the screen, the stand has adjustable CoreSync and Core Lightning+ RGB lights on the back for gamers’ enjoyment.
The 1800R curvature of the screen is reasonably moderate. When playing, the screen could handle a slightly larger curvature. The glossy surface of the screen can become a problem in a bright space.
The ultrawide panel has 3440 x 1440 pixels, which corresponds to a QHD screen in height. Thanks to the large pixel area, the screen is also suitable for work.
The dynamics on the screen are excellent, but the screen that was used at the fair was set too dark. Strangely, a kind of rawness was noticeable in the image, which comes from the combination of the speed of the panel, the accuracy and the lower refresh rate of the game.
In motion playback, there was at least no noticeable problem with fast gaming. This is not a big surprise, as the Odyssey G8 reaches a refresh rate of 175 hertz and the screen supports AMD FreeSync Premium. Thanks to the OLED technology, the image remains very sharp, no lag was detected at all in quick game tests.
Unfortunately, the connections are only small in size. Behind the screen you can find micro HDMI (2.1), mini DP (1.4) and USB-C.
The Samsung Odyssey OLED G85SB gaming monitor will go on sale by the end of the year, but the exact price is not revealed – we guess it will be even closer to a couple of thousand euros, so this is not going to be an option for every gambler.
