Introduction

This model of the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra smartphone appeared more than six months ago. However, it was not officially presented in Russia.

Judging by the fact that the Russian office of ZTE got hold of a sample, potential users need to wait for the device in the near future. The only thing that surprised me a little was the non-final software, which I was warned about in advance. So much time has passed since the announcement, and chaos can still be created inside the device.

Actually, that’s why I decided to write a first glance, and after the release of the final firmware, issue a full review. Fortunately, the smartphone deserves it.

So, before you is the most advanced device from ZTE. The “heart” of the device is the Snapdragon 888 – the hottest chip from Qualcomm in the literal sense. The screen has a refresh rate of 144 Hz – almost the highest on the smartphone market.

But the main feature lies in the cameras. There are already four of them: three for 64 MP and one for 8 MP. Almost all current focal lengths are at your disposal: 16mm, 25mm, 35mm and 135mm (approx). Moreover, the smartphone has laser focusing.

As a bonus, there are stereo speakers and fast charging 65 W, which can charge the smartphone from 0 to 100% in 45 minutes.

In the material of the briefing it was said: “There is no information on the plans of sales in the Russian market at this stage.” However, on AliExpress, they ask about 55,000 rubles for the Axon 30 Ultra.

Appearance, elements on the case

The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra device is made according to the patterns of all modern expensive smartphones: an elongated body, a rounded display, a metal frame, satin glass on the back, a huge module with cameras.

In my opinion, the device looks strict, stylish and rich! You immediately realize that this is a flagship smartphone. Partly reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra: similar chopped top and bottom ends, sloping edges on all sides, large lens openings and a tall module with cameras.

Near the module there is a metal branch to the side, which says: NEOVISION PHOTOGRAPHY. Some vivo smartphones are equipped with a similar element. Only there this nameplate looks down.

The design is created in such a way that the side frames protrude slightly, and the back of the case is slightly recessed. It is quite convenient to use such a device: the edges seem to lie on the back of your fingers.

On the front panel there is a camera inscribed in the screen, various sensors, and an earpiece.

Below is a slot for two SIM cards, a microphone, USB Type-C, and a second speaker. Speaker and speakerphone produce stereo sound.

On the right is a thin power button (embossed, very easy to use), a volume rocker is even thinner.

Above – an additional microphone.

On the reverse side there are three lenses with the same diameter, a triangular lens, an oval laser autofocus, a similar plan “truton” flash and another microphone for recording sound in front. When recording video, there is a microphone selection in the device settings.

Screen

MatrixFlexible curved display 6.67 “FHD + (2400 * 1080), 144Hz, AMOLED

Have you noticed that at one point the matrix of screens with QHD resolution disappeared even in the flagship models of smartphones? Devices with this screen resolution can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

Probably, manufacturers realized that no one particularly appreciates high density, and phone batteries drain faster. Therefore, almost all devices (from budget to flagship) began to be equipped with displays with FullHD + resolution.

In this case, we are dealing with an AMOLED matrix, which has very curved edges on the sides. I think that the device was being developed a year and a half ago, when such a solution was fashionable.

There are no fancy display settings in the Axon 30 Ultra, but there is a choice of refresh rates: 60, 90, 120 and 144 Hz.

The maximum measured brightness is about 750 cd / m2, which is not bad. Surprisingly, the ripple coefficient in this device is up to 10%, even within the brightness range from 10 to 50%. Which means (in theory) your eyes won’t get tired of PWM.

Of course, the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra has an AOD mode. Various screensavers are provided for it. The AOD glow is bright enough for night and day, the picture with notifications is clearly visible.

Total: excellent quality of the matrix, rich color reproduction, no PWM, high brightness, maximum refresh rate for such devices.

Working hours

The battery capacity is 4600 mAh, 144 Hz and the Snapdragon 888 tells us that the smartphone is not long-lived. Any device on 888 shows at best 4.5 hours of screen luminescence. For example, ASUS Zenfone 8 demonstrates about 3.5 hours of screen glow.

I have Axon 30 Ultra for a couple of days, but it is already clear that I should count on somewhere between 4 and 4.5 hours. That is, the device will work a full daylight hours without a heavy load.

But you won’t have to charge for a long time: from 0 to 100%, the battery receives energy in 45-55 minutes.

There is no wireless charging, which is somehow strange for such an expensive device.

Cameras

It’s worth starting with a pretty nicely designed lens module. Its substrate plays beautifully in light, displaying the entire color spectrum visible to the eye.

The three lenses not only have the same diameter, but also the same 64MP resolution. The 5x zoom lens is square in shape. All elements are symmetrical with respect to each other.

The main module is Sony IMX686 with optical stabilization and f / 1.6 hole.

Wide-angle module – Samsung GW3, without optical “stub” with f / 2.2 aperture. Very wide angle with distortion correction.

Module with 2x magnification – again Samsung GW3 without optical stabilizer (digital is used), f / 1.9.

Well, the trick of the device is 5x zoom with optical stabilization and f / 3.4 aperture.

At the moment, the software is not final, so the quality of photos and videos can be much better.

I liked the Axon 30 Ultra cameras. From the 5x zoom, you can pull out extremely good portrait shots, even in indoor lighting. The only negative is the weak blurring of the background.

The 2x zoom comes in handy where you need to take a portrait from a short distance. In addition, the soft blur works with this lens.

“Shirik” reveals itself better on the street. I would not take photographs of people indoors, as you get wild distortion at the edges (the software corrects the distortion).

Since 64 MP modules are used here, all three cameras are capable of recording 4K videos at 60 fps. 8K mode is available only for the main sensor.

The 5x optics are capable of shooting 1080P at 60 fps, which is not bad either.

The Axon 30 Ultra smartphone has a lot of different software settings, but I won’t talk about them at first glance. Better to release a separate piece.

Impression

The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra smartphone is a real high-quality flagship that is in no way inferior to Samsung and Xiaomi.

The body is made soundly, materials – satin glass and metal. The ergonomics are excellent.

There are no questions about the performance of the system: the memory of the sea, the processor is powerful. I did not run synthetic tests with non-final software.

Cameras are another story. The smartphone covers almost the entire focal length range – from about 16 to 135 mm. It shoots video on three cameras in 4K resolution and at a frequency of 60 fps, and on the main module it is capable of creating 8K videos.

Cons:

  • Lack of wireless charging
  • Lack of 3.5 mm jack
  • Lack of dust and moisture protection

Total: it seems to me that ZTE has got a decent smartphone that I want to use; a clear competitor to the more expensive Galaxy S21 Ultra and Xiaomi 11 Ultra.
