First impression: Xiaomi 12 Pro and Xiaomi 12 – now on its way to Sweden

It was already at the end of last year that Xiaomi showed off the Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro, but now we have started testing the devices and can share the first impressions. Xiaomi 12 Pro and Xiaomi 12 are both powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the sharpest that can be found in the system chip path today, so it’s both top models even if the most extreme features are missing.

To Sweden in a week

Pre-booking for both phones opens in Sweden on April 6 and deliveries start on April 21. Then the price of the Xiaomi 12, which is sold with 8GB of working memory and 256 GB of storage, stays at SEK 8,700, while the Pro model costs 11,500 with 12 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage.

The most obvious difference between the two phones now that we have tested the devices for a few hours is the format. The Xiaomi 12 Pro has a 6.73-inch screen and the Xiaomi 12 has a more compact format and a 6.28-inch screen. The difference is very noticeable in the hand and both screens support 120 hertz refresh rate. The Pro model can also show higher resolution and go as far down to 1 hertz to save battery.

Fast and super fast charging

Both phones feel fast in use after I switched so that the screens are updated as quickly as possible. The default mode is that the update rate is dynamic to balance performance with power consumption. Overall, both phones have a similar shape and feel, with a slightly curved screen, something that is most aesthetic and not used for specific functions. Worth noting is that the Xiaomi 12 Pro comes with an included charger that supports fast charging in 120 W.

The cameras on the back are three in number on both phones and our initial impression is that they can handle most situations without adding anything extreme. Xiaomi calls these two phones both “lifestyle phones” and it suggests that just like last year we can see an Ultra version later in the year that takes the experience more to the extreme and pushes the boundaries. In the dark, the Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro both take good pictures without being the best on the market, and when it comes to zoom, I get good detail up to about 5x zooming in with the Xiaomi 12 and a little longer with the Pro model. Xiaomi 12 Pro has a telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom combined with main camera and wide angle while Xiaomi 12 has to settle for the main camera, wide angle and a macro camera. The latter adds nothing of value.

AI focus

During the presentation of the new phones launched in the European market in Vienna, Xiaomi talked a lot about smart AI technology used in the cameras to help you take better pictures and movies and one such technology is Xiaomi Profocus which is found in both Xiaomi 12 and in 12 Pro. It identifies people and keeps focus. For example, we saw a short film completely recorded with the Xiaomi 12 camera. Our own tests confirm that the cameras are good at following a person who is moving, but that it becomes more difficult as soon as several people are moving. For a spectator seat at the presentation, for example, the camera would rather focus on the audience than the people on stage, so it does not seem completely perfect.

At the same time as Xiaomi released the Xiaomi 12 series for the Swedish market, with sales starting on April 6 and delivery on April 21, the Xiaomi Watch S1 and S1 Active smartwatches were also shown, as were the Xiaomi Buds 3T and 3T Pro headphones. The Xiaomi Watch S1 can be charged wirelessly directly from the Xiaomi 12 Pro which has reverse wireless charging, but that technology is lacking in the Xiaomi 12.
