First A340 to land on a glacial ice runway is piloted by a Portuguese man

Portuguese pilot Carlos Mirpuri made history by landing, for the first time, an Airbus A340, belonging to the Portuguese airline Hi Fly, in Antarctica.

The flight departed South Africa on November 2nd and lasted about five hours each way. Never before has an A340 landed on an Antarctic glacial ice runway.

According to the airline’s website, the plane will be used to transport a small number of tourists, as well as scientists and essential cargo.

In the ‘Captain’s Diary’, published on the Hi Fly website, Mirpuri describes the emotions that preceded the historic day: “It would be a long day for the crew, but the thrill of participating in such a unique event was above all.”
