Fires: Greece sends two amphibious heavy planes to Portugal

Greece has made available two amphibious heavy aircraft to support firefighting in Portugal following a request for support from the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, the Government announced today.

The Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) mentions in a note that the two devices, two Canadair, should arrive in Portugal on Sunday afternoon, “being immediately integrated into the device” for fighting fires.

In view of the weather forecasts for the next few days, which point to an aggravation of the risk of rural fire, the Government today determined the declaration of the alert situation on the continent, which will be in force between 00:00 on 21 August and 23:00: 59 of the 23rd of August.

The European Union (EU) announced, on Thursday, in a statement, that this “difficult summer” has already mobilized 29 planes, eight helicopters, 360 firefighters and more than a hundred vehicles to respond to requests for assistance across Europe under the European Civil Protection Mechanism.

The European Commission added that “in addition, the EU’s ‘Copernicus’ satellite emergency mapping service was activated for forest fires 46 times, by 15 countries” and that “about 150 firefighters from Bulgaria, Romania, Germany, France , Finland and Norway were deployed to Greece in July and August to support local firefighters”.
