A fire broke out this Monday in the early evening in the Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul church, located in the center of Lille.
The firefighters received the alert shortly before 8 p.m. The disaster extended to the roof of the building, made of brick and which dates from the 19th century.
Shortly after 9:30 p.m., the prefect of Hauts-de-France, Michel Lalande, indicated that the fire was under control.
The firefighters will however still be mobilized for a few hours to completely extinguish the fire, because there are still embers escaping from the roof.
The prefect indicated in the evening that the accidental origin is for the time being the most plausible, pending the opening of a judicial investigation.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin reacted on Twitte, expressing his support for the firefighters involved, and his “thoughts of solidarity for Lille and Catholics”.
“This evening the Lille church of Saint Pierre Saint Paul de Wazemmes is affected by a fire. Thanks to the firefighters who are currently fighting to prevent the spread of flames in this religious and historical heritage, whose framework has been recently renovated”, wrote of his side the mayor of Lille Martine Aubry.
