When Kate Hare gave birth to her son, Callahan, she didn’t even get to hold him in her arms. Her newborn baby was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit as doctors said “something was wrong”.
Little Callahan’s parents were quickly told there were clues of malignancy in his blood and the little boy began a series of tests. They soon learned that the little boy had infantile acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
“I remember telling my husband how I still haven’t met my son and I feel like I’m losing him. I heard this horrible news and I still hadn’t held him in my arms,” his mother recalled.
Newborn Callahan stayed in the hospital for 8 months, while his parents were constantly by his side in shifts. “Our 5-year-old daughter was at home and we had to watch our two children in shifts”says Callahan’s dad, who had leukemia when he was 25 and knew what his newborn son was going through.
“8 months was a long time… Our son’s treatments were really difficult, but inside we were sure that in the end he will succeed. We were in the hospital and that made us feel safe – whatever happened, the doctors would deal with it.”
Despite the fact that he spends a lot of time in the hospital and undergoes harsh treatments, he is like all babies his age. “Apart from a tube in his nose, you don’t understand the adventure he went through. Its durability is truly incredible. Fight as hard as anyone!”his mother reports.
For the first 2 to 3 months of his life, the little boy had not smiled and his parents thought that the repeated tests and treatments made him unhappy. From the moment his first smile broke out, though, he hasn’t stopped laughing and being happy about everything!
He is a happy child even though he is still on medication doctors believe that Callahan can live a normal childhood and grow into a healthy and functioning adult.
