FIFA says English clubs can use South American players

The federations of Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Paraguay withdrew the complaints they had filed with FIFA, allowing English clubs to use footballers from those South American countries in this weekend’s games, the governing body said today.

Several players from English League teams have been called up by their national teams for the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup, but the clubs opposed England’s departure to countries on the UK’s red list regarding the pandemic of covid-19, which would require a quarantine of 10 days on return.

“As a sign of trust, goodwill and cooperation, the federations of Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Paraguay, in close contact with FIFA, decided to withdraw the complaints about players who play in English clubs and were not released by them to the recent international games,” FIFA said in a statement.

The decision announced by the world football regulatory body also takes into account the “positive signs and constructive dialogue” with the British government regarding the use of South American players by the respective teams in the ‘window’ of international games in October.

“The UK Government is now open to finding a reasonable solution with the three bodies. [FIFA, Federação Inglesa de Futebol e ‘Premier League’], who are working together, in a spirit of mutual understanding, in the interests of all”, states the statement.
