Fiat F500 is one of the icons among small vehicles and is very popular with users. For the American market, respectively for California and Oregon, an electrified version was created in 2016, which was basically a modified classic version. You can also find several of these vehicles here, but they all come from imports from the USA. This model was not sold in Europe. Although the vehicle is interesting, from a technical point of view, it offers a battery with a capacity of only 24 kWh, which will provide a range of about 140 km, in addition in combination with only 230 V charging. Its usability is thus limited only to driving in the city and the surrounding area within the commute.
However, the new F500e goes differently. The vehicle is built on a completely new platform and at first glance will impress with its unmistakable Italian design, rich technological equipment and decent parameters of the propulsion system. This is also confirmed by winning the prestigious award for the best industrial design Red Dot Award 2020 in October last year. The new electric model comes in three body versions: hatchback, convertible and a complete novelty is the 3 + 1, which is equipped with a third small door. These open in the opposite direction and are without a center pillar, so you can get in the vehicle more comfortably, load or unload large objects more easily, or place a child more comfortably in the back seat. However, when you close the door, you will not see the difference from other versions. The new F500e will only be produced in the electric version, but for fans of internal combustion engines, the original model remains in production for the time being. The F500e is available with two battery capacities, usable 23.6 kWh or 42 kWh. The engine driving the front axle has a power of 70 kW with a smaller battery, 87 kW with a larger battery and in both cases a torque of 220 Nm.
Although the engine power may seem small, thanks to its relatively low weight, it gives the car decent dynamics and the harder chassis ensures good driving characteristics even when cornering. The new F500e is basically bigger than the original model in every way. It is 6 cm longer and wider and the wheelbase has grown by 20 mm. A significant hallmark are the new LED front lights, which are divided into two parts, the upper extends into the front hood and is in the style of the original five hundred. The FIAT logo on the front hood has been replaced by the large 500 logo. The rear group lights are rather square and also completely entrusted with LEDs. The novelty is available in 4 trim levels: Action, Passion, Icon and the top version of La Prima. The basic F500e Action already includes all assistance and safety systems, such as driver concentration monitoring, autonomous emergency braking that can also detect cyclists and pedestrians, lane keeping assistant, lane departure warning system or traffic sign recognition. Infotainment enables bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections and supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay wireless connections. I had La Prima equipment for the test, which is the highest and actually introductory. The instrument panel is dominated by a huge 10.25 “touch screen with a series of air conditioning control buttons below it. Instead of a transmission, there are only four buttons. However, these are located like other buttons in a row next to each other, I didn’t think the designers could have shown more imagination in this case. In front of the driver is a 7 “display in a small dome that shows information about the on-board computer and other systems, including the navigation map. I have to really praise here, in this category of cars we often come across a “sloppy” instrument panel, but here it is very good in terms of display options and successful graphics. Of course, there is a mobile phone to connect with an electric car, but also to connect the vehicle to the Internet. However, I was unable to run the mobile application during the test.
The new F500e offers the option of AC charging with an output of 2.3 kW or for an additional charge with an output of up to 11 kW. The basic version of the 500 Action also has a DC charge with an output of 50 kW. All higher Passion, Icon and La Prima equipment have a standard DC fast charge with an output of 85 kW. However, during the test I did not exceed 65 kW, which could be due to high outdoor temperatures. Still, charging is fast enough and you can reach 80% in about 30 minutes. The low consumption was pleasantly surprised. When driving in the city and in the districts, it is not a problem to achieve a consumption of 11.4 kWh / 100 km, it climbs to 15 – 16 kWh / 100 km on the highway. During the whole test, our consumption after 900 km stabilized at 13.3 kWh / 100 km and we reached a maximum range of 340 km. Under normal conditions, even with the use of air conditioning, the range was around 280 km.
As I mentioned, the vehicle offers very good driving characteristics as well as fun driving. The workmanship is of good quality, I was only hampered by unventilated leather seats. You can only use the rear seats to transport children, and the trunk is also not one of the largest. However, this is, of course, taken into account. It is a pity that the manufacturer did not create at least a space under the front hood for the transport of cables, or did not pack a more compact, smaller one. This way you have half the suitcase occupied by cables.
Just as I praised infotainment, I must also praise the work of driving assistants. Adaptive cruise control also works with the brand recognition system and offers to transfer the brand when it registers. Just confirm with the button and it is set in cruise control. In sections with clearly visible lanes, active lane keeping also worked very well. The vehicle was also equipped with front and rear parking sensors and a rear parking camera. Unfortunately, the front sensors responded very often to surrounding vehicles each time they stopped at an intersection, so it was better to turn them off. The lights were fully automatic, but their light output was only a better average. However, given the purpose of the car, that is quite enough.
What to add at the end? Fiat F500e is primarily a stylish. If you are looking for something practical or not with a good price / performance ratio, you need to look elsewhere. Fiatka simply buys with the heart, although from a technical point of view it certainly also has something to offer. Just breathe the price of J.
