The initiatives of the regions for changes in the energy sector are not new, the government has been dealing with them for many weeks. This concerns the European-wide determination of maximum prices and variants of the transformation of the ČEZ energy group. This was announced by Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS) in response to the proposals of the Association of Regions. However, according to the Prime Minister, none of the proposed measures has a quick and simple solution.
“We are discussing with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the Europe-wide capping of the prices of input commodities for final power plants, and this will also be a major topic of Monday’s meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The preparation of variants of the transformation of ČEZ with the aim of gaining control over electricity production capacities is also continuing on our territory,” said the prime minister. The so-called the final power plant fills the grid and its price is essential, it is the value at which electricity is sold and bought on the exchange regardless of the cost at which other power plants produce.
The Association of Regions on Friday called on the government to regulate gas and electricity prices for households from the beginning of next year. According to her, the cabinet should also designate a state energy trader to whom the companies would have to sell it. The government should aim to acquire a 100% share in CEZ’s production capacity. The government should use money from the sector tax for the measure or by taxing each megawatt-hour produced, said association chairman Martin Kuba (ODS). He called all proposals temporary solutions.
At the pan-European level, Cuba mentioned Spain and Portugal as models, which defined the highest acceptable gas price and subsidized everything above it.
The Minister of Industry and Trade Jozef Síkela (STAN) is preparing to convene an extraordinary European Council for Energy. According to Síkela, this is a pan-European problem, so a pan-European solution should be found. He noted that one of the possible solutions would be to determine the maximum price of energy.
