The Czech Republic and Slovakia are united in their opinion of supporting Ukraine, which is defending itself against Russian aggression. At the same time, it is necessary to think about the future restoration of the attacked country. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala told journalists after a meeting with the new head of the Slovak government, Ľudovít Ódor.

It was the first meeting between the two politicians since Ódor became the head of the caretaker government in mid-May. Fiala described the relations between the two countries as excellent and said that everything must be done to keep them that way. In Bratislava, the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic also met with French President Emmanuel Macron.
“We are clearly convinced that it is necessary to support Ukraine with all the means available,” said Fiala. “We should also think about how we will participate, for example in something together, in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine and in the reconstruction of this country,” he added.
According to Fial, another area in which both countries should cooperate is, for example, efforts to ensure energy security. “The common interest of Slovakia and the Czech Republic is the development of nuclear energy, because it ensures our energy self-sufficiency and strengthens our energy security,” he said. “We have very good cooperation in the field of security and defense, and here too, space is opening up for other projects,” he added.
Ódor, who before being appointed prime minister held the position of vice-governor of the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS), then said at a joint press conference with Fiala that his cabinet might be inspired by the Czech Republic when preparing proposals for the recovery of state finances.
“In the Czech Republic, there is an effort to consolidate public finances, not in a populist way, but in a rational way. Something similar awaits us, the official government. We might find some inspiration from the Czech Republic on how to do it,” he said.
Before the meeting with Ódor, Fiala also held talks with French President Macron. The Czech Prime Minister said that he also spoke with him about the support of Ukraine or the relations of European states with China. According to Fial, the next topic of the conversation was nuclear energy.
“We belong to like-minded countries that believe in the development of nuclear energy and cannot imagine their energy mix without nuclear development. For us, France is a strong and important ally in this matter,” said the Czech Prime Minister.
According to Fiala, France and the Czech Republic also share a common opinion on the introduction of the Euro 7 emission standard for motor vehicles. “We are convinced that it is necessary to modify the proposal in a significant way,” said Fiala. According to him, the Czech Republic also has a strong ally in this matter in the French president.
