Federfarma: “Pharmacies make two thirds of tampons. We foresee a boom, we are ready”

D-day is October 15th. Date on which the obligation to show the Green Pass in public and private workplaces will come into force. Day in which about 4/5 million workers not yet vaccinated, will be forced to use the obligatory tampon, valid for 48 hours, to access the places they are deputed to, otherwise they will be considered “unjustified absent”. According to an estimate by Gimbe, a recourse to about 14-15 million rapid antigen tests per week is expected which, according to President Cartabellotta, “would not be really feasible, because we do not have this production capacity”.

Add to this that, in all likelihood, many people will decide to swab in pharmacies, a place that for proximity and convenience is the natural outlet for this service to the citizen. It is not a gamble, therefore, to hypothesize on the eve of October 15, large queues at the clinics organized by the network of pharmacies in the area, with the risk of a real blockage of the service. Are they ready for this effort? According to what Dr. Roberto Tobia, national secretary of Federfarma and president of the PGEU told us, it seems so: “We are trying to develop a further effort to respond clearly to the health emergency as requested by the Government and the General Son “. Dr Tobia, however, does not hide the fact that this “will require a greater commitment that pharmacies are preparing to carry out thanks to greater organization, a supplementary effort also in terms of human resources, to meet the needs of a number of tampons which will certainly be higher than what we have done so far ”.

It is no mystery, in fact, that today in Italy about 2/3 of the rapid antigen tests are carried out in private pharmacies with agreements and that to date, about 9,000 pharmacies, out of a total of 19,000, adhere to this initiative: “And It is clear that the number of requests will increase, even if I do not know how much ”, explains the national secretary of Federfarma. “It is evident that the number of pharmacies that will guarantee this service will also probably increase. There are pharmacies that for objective reasons cannot do it, but others, which had not equipped themselves before, which have now decided to lend a hand to the system and to the citizens who must obtain the Green Pass. I imagine that other health facilities will do the same to support the government as we do ”.

It must be said, in fact, that the commitment made by pharmacies during the Covid emergency was truly extraordinary. In fact, in these facilities, in addition to making quick unsanitary swabs and helping citizens with more digital difficulties to book the vaccine earlier and request the Green Pass later, Anticovid vaccinations were also carried out almost from the beginning. And that’s not all: “Now it will be possible to carry out the flu vaccine in pharmacies, according to a decree of the Ministry of Health issued in recent days. Therefore we will proceed with the administration of both serums: anticovid and anti-flu ”, explains Dr. Tobia. “The point of view, in fact, as health workers, is to convince hesitant citizens to get vaccinated: the goal remains that, not to make swabs”. In short, the network of approved pharmacies is preparing for a truly enormous effort. Will it be able to withstand the impact of about 15 million tampons a week, as well as guaranteeing all other services to the citizen?
