Fake GPS Hacks: Fake location with Android or iPhone

GPS faking is in vogue: There are many good reasons for hacking the location reported by the cell phone. Be it because you want to test a new app or even develop it yourself, or because an interesting online service only works in the USA – pretending to be a different location, also known as “location spoofing”, has never been as easy as it is today.

In this guide, we discuss the possibilities of faking GPS coordinates on Android smartphones and the iPhone.

GPS: This is how smartphones determine their location

Modern smartphones usually determine their whereabouts with the so-called A-GPS. The abbreviation “GPS” has long since become a synonym for satellite-based navigation.

With the cell phones, the “A” has been added, which stands for “Assisted GPS”. This means that the smartphone also uses WLANs available nearby and information from the cellular network to determine its location. This saves the battery and enables the location to be displayed even in the interior, where there is no visual contact with the satellites of the GPS system.

Fake GPS location on Android

As an Android user, first download the free app Fake GPS Location Professional on her cell phone. Then unlock the Android developer settings. To do this, open the Android settings and tap on “About phone”.

There you tap seven times in a row on the line “Build Number”. Then exit “About the phone” and find the new entry “Developer options” directly above it.

Note: We are assuming a standard Android, such as that provided by Google. The procedure may vary slightly depending on the mobile phone. In newer Android versions, the menu item “About the phone” is hidden under “System”, for example. If the method described does not work, the best thing to do is to look for the manufacturer and, if applicable, the model name and the addition “Unlock developer options” or “enable developer settings” “on the web.

Open Developer Options and tap on “Choose an app for simulated locations”. Then select “Fake GPS Location Professional”.

Now start the Fake GPS Location Professional App. Then select the desired location and press the red button at the bottom right to activate it. You can check the success with Google Maps, for example. After pressing the location button, the fake location should be displayed as your current whereabouts. To end the spell, press the pause button that the app displays in the lower left corner.

Tip: As an alternative to Fake GPS Location Professional, you can also use iMyFone AnyTo. The software for PC and Mac offers more functions, but requires a cable connection between your Android smartphone and your computer. How the program works is shown below using an iPhone as an example.

Fake GPS location on the iPhone

It is much more difficult to simulate a location on the iPhone. Apps available in the AppStore are therefore not able to fool other apps into a location, as is possible with Android. You can use it to create more or less elaborate photos in which the (supposed) location is combined with photos of you or local sights. With these pictures, however, you can only outsmart your circle of friends.

Real GPS fakers, for example LocationFaker, require a jailbreak. When jailbreaking, you gain administration rights for Apple’s iOS operating system by exploiting a security gap. You can then install software past Apple’s controls. However, the effort for this is high and requires not only an exploitable vulnerability but also some prior knowledge.

In our experience, what works quite well are programs available for Windows and macOS that simulate a location for the iPhone. But they have two disadvantages. On the one hand, they require a cable connection between the iPhone and the computer for the entire duration of the deception. On the other hand, you usually have to restart the iPhone at the end in order to reliably end the deception.

with iMyFone AnyTo we tried one of these solutions. There are alternatives, for example in the form of Wondershare Dr. Fone and Tenorshare iAnygo. To test it, we downloaded the demo version of iMyFone AnyTo and installed it on Windows 10. We connected the iPhone to the PC via Apple’s Lightning cable. When starting, the software shows the location of the PC. We jump from Munich to Berlin using the search field at the top left. By clicking “Move” we transfer the location to the iPhone. The maneuver fails on the first attempt. The counterfeit only works after restarting the smartphone on which iOS version 14 is running.

A special feature of iMyFone AnyTo is the ability to simulate tours using it. This is particularly useful when you play games like Pokémon Go. For a virtual tour, click on the “S” -shaped icon in iMyFone AnyTo at the top right. Then mark the destination on the map.

The software now shows a menu on the left-hand side in which you can still set the speed of movement. The tour begins with a click on “Move”. AnyTo always uses the shortest route for guidance. The multipoint mode, which is also available in addition to the two-point mode, offers more space for individual routes.

To return to the “correct” GPS, we click in AnyTo on the right – roughly in the middle – on the smartphone symbol. Then we shut down the iPhone via “Settings> General> Switch off” and switch it on again immediately.

In the demo version of iMyFone AnyTo you can fake a location as often as you like. Two- and multi-point modes only work once. Activation costs around 9 euros for one month, 16 euros for three months, 36 euros for one year and 56 euros for a “lifelong” license.
