Fad and Netflix award three short films about diversity

These are the three short films made by winning students of the project “Serial Diversity” organized by Fad and Netflix.

“We are the generation that will write, direct and star in the stories that should have been told too long ago.” With those words the event where Fad Y Netflix have presented the three winning short films of the project “Diversity in series: stories that deserve to be told”.

This initiative was born with the purpose of promote the acceptance of diversity in the classroom, and in it 600 students have participated secondary education and vocational training. They had to develop, as a group, a complete script for a short film that would show or evoke a reflection on the importance of diversity.

This has been stated by the RTVE journalist Paula Saínz-Pardo, in charge of conducting the act. This has been chaired by the Second Vice President and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calvin.

In addition, it has been attended by representatives of the award-winning school groups, members of the jury, such as the writer Elizabeth Benavent or the president of CIMA, Cristina Andreu; the Vice President of Original Content of Netflix in Spain and Portugal, Diego Avalos, and the president of Fad, Ignacio Bayon, among others.

“Stories are one of the most important vehicles for trying to achieve this representation and diversity that we see reflected around us every day,” says Ávalos. «That helps us fight for an increasingly inclusive society. They are a vehicle to establish dialogue, to create reflection, to promote the values ​​of respect and social inclusion ”, he continues explaining.

The three winning short films of “Diversidad en serie”

The 82 scripts submitted they show some situation or content that invites us to reflect on diversity. In this case, there have been three winners. The first one is “With feet on the ground”, presented by Paula Neco and Juan Steban Ospina from IES Renacimiento (Madrid).

It tells the story of Lucas, a boy who was born and spent the first years of his life on a space mission. Upon returning to Earth, Lucas has to adjust to his new life. Everything is new for him: the sun, living in a house, food, going to school and even the force of gravity. Everything will change for him when he meets Luna.

Another of the winners is “Loop”, presented by Alejandra Godoy Prieto and Sara Sáez López from Colegio San Patricio el Soto (Alcobendas, Madrid). “What if we were all the same?” Raises this piece. Anyone teaching the viewer what is it like to live in a world where everything is the same. The action takes place on October 10 at the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid. This short conveys the idea that if nobody were different the world would not make sense.

“The magic ball” It is the third, presented by Alba Esteban, Lucía Marchado, Irene Bruna, Inés Martín and Andrea Polo from the IES Luís García Berlanga (Coslada, Madrid). A girl named Iris is dedicated in an esoteric shop to make her customers see what your “inner self” is like with the help of your magic ball. The story tells what happened with three customers who enter his store: a Madrid, Belén; a black boy, Josh, and an Asian, Yukie. The three learn a great lesson after passing through the store.

The three winners were chosen by a multidisciplinary jury made up of professionals from Fad, Netflix and the educational field. These were the members: Verónica Fernández, Director of Content for Netflix in Spain; the author and creator Elísabet Benavent; Cristina Andreu, president of the Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media (CIMA); the general director of Fad, Beatriz Martín Padura; and the teacher at the Gredos San Diego Las Suertes School in Madrid and specialist in diversity, José Luis Amo.

The project counts with a web and the next school year 2021-22 will begin a new edition.
