Facebook Introduces New Tools to Improve Teenage Mental Health

Facebook will introduce new measures for children and teenagers who use the social networks that the company has. The app will prompt young people to take a break from Instagram, for example, and alert them if they repeatedly look at content that is harmful to mental health.

The decision comes after a former Facebook data scientist earlier this week accused the platform of being bad for young people. Specifically, Frances Haugen criticized the company for not making changes to Instagram after an internal investigation showed that the social network had negative effects on teens’ mental health.

Now Facebook also plans to introduce new controls for parents, on an optional basis, so they can supervise what their kids are doing online.

The new tools were outlined this Sunday by Nick Clegg, Facebook’s vice president of Global Affairs and Communications. “We cannot, with a magic wand, make everyone’s life perfect. What we can do is improve our products so that they are both safe and enjoyable to use,” he said during CNN’s “State of the Union” program this Sunday.

“We’re going to introduce something that I think will make a considerable difference: when your teenager is looking at the same content over and over, and if it’s content that might not be conducive to their well-being, we’ll ‘push’ them to others contents”, he also revealed.

According to Clegg, Facebook has invested US$13 billion over the past few years to ensure the platform’s security and the company has around 40,000 people working on these issues.
