F1: Botas wins sprint in Monza, Hamilton only fifth

OUR SPONSOR

Valteri Botas won the sprint race in Monza, Max passed the finish line second, while the last point in the sprint went to Ricardo in McLaren. Hamilton finished the sprint race only in fifth place.

Botas managed to save the first place until the first chicane and had a fairly calm race that lasted 18 laps. At the very start, Hamilton did the worst, losing positions to both McLaren drivers and Gasley in the Alfa Tour car, so he was practically in sixth place on the way out of the first chicane. Gasley had slight contact with Ricardo in the middle of the first chicane and in that contact he damaged the front wing. After getting out of the first chicane, he did not release the gas, the front wing gave way, detached and Gasley ended the race by hitting the barrier next to the track, which caused the activation of the safety vehicle on a couple of laps. Hamilton thus regained one position and was placed in fifth place, which was also his final placement at the end of the race. Lewis failed to match the McLaren, and Norris got close enough for the DRS, but the attack did not occur.

Botas did not have any problems and finished the race as the first, which brought him three points, but not the start from the pole position in tomorrow’s race, due to a preventive change of the unit. That is exactly why Max drove quite conservatively and passed the finish line as the second, which guarantees him a start from the pole position tomorrow. The two points won in the sprint race and the start from the pole position tomorrow is the proper balance of today when it comes to Max and Red Bull. Ricardo did great at the start and will start tomorrow from the front row, ahead of his club colleague Norris, who kept Hamilton behind. Leclerc and Sainz finished the race behind Hamilton, and Ferrari mechanics again had a short deadline to repair Sainz’s car, which was damaged by a rather strong accident at training this morning in the Askara curve.

Giovanni did a great job in front of the home fans, completing the race in eighth place, ahead of Perez and Strol who completed the top 10. Behind them, former F1 champions Alonso and Vettel finished the race, marking a rather uninteresting sprint race in Monza with a duel. Vettel finished in a “sandwich” of two Alpines, and behind Okon, the Williams duo in the Latifi order, Russell, passed through the finish line.

The race for the Grand Prix of Italy starts tomorrow at 3 p.m.
