Prague – Part of the republic from southern Bohemia through Vysočina and eastern Bohemia can be hit exceptionally hard by this afternoon and evening with extremely strong storms with torrential rain of around 60 millimeters, gusts of wind at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour and large hail, warning meteorologists. The rest of the country is in danger of very strong storms, with the exception of the Karlovy Vary and Ústí nad Labem regions, where storms and the associated dangerous phenomena are to be slightly weaker. After intense rains, some smaller rivers and streams may flood, the greater risk of floods will be in the Czech Republic.

The warning against extremely strong storms is valid from 15:00 to midnight for the Pardubice Region and the Vysočina Region and for some regions of the South Bohemian and Hradec Králové Regions. The warning for very strong or severe thunderstorms will expire at six in the morning on Friday.

“This afternoon and evening and Friday night, there will be showers or thunderstorms in most of our area from the southwest, which will be strong to very strong in places with torrential rain of about 60 millimeters, hail and larger dimensions and gusts of wind about 90 kilometers per hour. In southern and eastern Bohemia and in the Vysočina region, the rare occurrence of extremely strong thunderstorms with large hail and gusts of wind around 100 kilometers per hour cannot be ruled out during this afternoon and evening, “said the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI).

During the night, storm activity should weaken, in Moravia and Silesia, strong storms may exceptionally occur on Friday afternoons and evenings.

In areas where strong to very strong thunderstorms are expected, levels may temporarily rise sharply, especially on smaller streams, to the level of the first or second flood stage. “In the case of extremely strong storms, an increase to the third stage of flood activity cannot be ruled out in rare cases,” meteorologists added.

The flood emergency, when water in rivers can flow from the banks into the surrounding landscape, will apply from 15:00 for Prague, the South Bohemian, Plzeň, Pardubice and Vysočina regions as well as for part of the Central Bohemian and Hradec Králové regions. On Friday morning, these regions will be transferred to a lower degree, ie flood vigilance, which from this afternoon also applies to all Moravian regions, the Liberec region, part of the Hradec Králové and Central Bohemia regions.

Today, the warning of meteorologists against heat is also valid, temperatures in some places in Moravia and Silesia can exceed 34 degrees Celsius. In all four Moravian regions, fire warnings are valid until midnight.
